Preparation and cooking: 20 minutes

Mie goreng are Indonesian fried noodles with egg noodles stir-fried in a sweet and spicy sauce. The sauce is a simple mix of soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and spicy sriracha, something you can whip up on the fly from ingredients you probably have on hand.

The food is very popular in Indonesia, served everywhere from top restaurants to street vendors and everywhere in between, with a clear Chinese influence.

You may see it referred to as "mee goreng" or "bakmie goreng" or even "mi goreng", although it is a brand of instant noodles with similar flavors that you can buy at the grocery store.

There are many ways to customize this dish by adding a sauce or using different noodles, vegetables and proteins, or serving it vegetarian.

And it's done! Your mie goreng is ready to serve! It looks really tempting, a big bowl of stir-fried noodles with prawns, it's irresistible!

Recipe tips and notes:

  • Sauce. The mie goreng sauce is a mixture of sweet soy sauce and sriracha, although we think of it as a base. I like to balance out the sweet with a little unsweetened soy sauce and add a little more sriracha. Add additional spicy elements if desired, or other matching ingredients such as shrimp paste or another chili sauce.
  • Noodles. Egg noodles are perfect for mie goreng because they are rich, silky and luxurious. They soak up all the flavors of the stir fry sauce. If you want, you can use other noodles, such as wheat, but egg noodles are ideal. You can find versions made with rice noodles.
  • Proteins. I love this shrimp version, but shredded chicken is a great alternative. If you want to add shrimp, add chicken. Pork is also great, and you can find versions made with beef or goat. Some popular versions are made with egg. You can skip the meat and focus on vegetables for a satisfying vegetarian version. As you can see, mie goreng is quite a versatile dish with many possible variations.
